Don Cusic is Curb Professor of Music Industry History at Belmont University. He is the author of over 30 books, including biographies of Roger Miller, Eddy Arnold, and Gene Autry. His latest tome, “Chet Atkins: Mr. Guitar” will be released in June 2025 on University of Georgia Press. Appointed by Mayor Karl Dean, Cusic has served on the Metropolitan Historical Commission since February 2010.
When America’s documentarian, Ken Burns needed information on the history of country music, he tapped Don Cusic. The two men had met nearly a decade earlier when Cusic, a professor at Belmont University, taught part of a curriculum based on Burns’ Civil War documentary. Cusic served as a script consultant for Ken Burns’ 8-part Country Music documentary, working closely with screenwriter, Dayton Duncan. Dr. Cusic subsequently worked on a county music curriculum based on that documentary.
“The story of country music, in a lot of ways, is the story of a fight for respect. … It’s the music of the people," Cusic said in an interview about country music history and the Ken Burns documentary. "It's the music of the working class. … It tells a good story.”
