The Los Angeles Dodgers visited the White House on Monday after winning the 2024 World Series and their critics are upset about that.
While it is customary for college and professional sports champions to visit 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, these are polarizing times when everything is viewed under a microscope, and as a political statement.
The trend continued Monday when MLB superstar Mookie Betts, the eight-time all-star and three-time World Series champion, visited President Donald Trump alongside his team despite Trump’s diss of baseball’s biggest Black icon.
“Sad that the injustice given to Jackie Robinson by the clown is being ignored by the Dodgers. Shame on all of you going to the (White House),” replied one upset commentator to Betts’ latest Instagram post, which read, “It’s never just one guy. It’s all of us.”
Betts received a shoutout and handshake from Trump, who capitalized on having the six-time Golden Glove-winner, and 2018 American League MVP on White House grounds.
Needless to say, the move rubbed some folks the wrong way after Trump was caught trying to wipe the accomplishments of iconic Black Americans, including Dodgers legend Jackie Robinson — the first Black MLB player who broke the league’s color barrier, and a World War II veteran — from American history.
His feats were “mistakenly” removed from the Defense Department website before being restored due to backlash — something Betts never publicly addressed during the trip, which some feel he should never have taken.
“It takes strength to stand out and stand down. What a pivotal moment and a gargantuan disappointment. Sometimes the best of the best aren’t clutch when it really matters,“ replied one incensed IG commentator. ”Jackie would be SO disappointed in you. By going to the White House you are giving a voice to racism and fascism. Do better!” wrote another.
Betts attended the Dodgers’ World Series/White House celebration in 2021 under President Joe Biden after sitting it out — his Red Sox won the World Series in 2018 — under Trump.

Betts later said he regretted the move, which let down late-night talk show host and comedian Jimmy Kimmel.
“This is disappointing,” Kimmel said during Monday’s monologue, per the Boston globe. “Our World Series champion Los Angeles Dodgers met the draft-dodger-in-chief at the White House.
“It was a unique opportunity for the franchise that signed Jackie Robinson to meet the president who had him removed from our government websites.”
Ex-NFL punter Chris Kluwe called the Dodgers’ White House trip “un-American.”
“I have no respect for ANY athlete that visits this White House,” Kluwe wrote to X. “You are unAmerican if you do so, as is anyone who supports or enables this administration. Let me repeat that. You (sic) actions are in *direct* opposition to the Declaration of Independence.
“You can literally look up the list of the complaints the founders had, and there are at least six that are happening RIGHT NOW.”
