SIOUX CITY (KTIV) - Numerous severe thunderstorm warnings were issued across Siouxland Friday evening, but today, we have returned to winter.

Spotty snow showers will fall in northern Siouxland this morning but will be decreasing in coverage as we get into the late morning hours and lunchtime.

Factoring in wind gusts near 50mph, blowing snow will be a concern. As such, Saturday is a First Alert Weather Day.

Travel impacts are anticipated due to the blowing snow and reduced visibility. Thankfully, temperatures are a hair above freezing meaning accumulation on roads is not expected. However, the blowing snow will be enough to cause travel impacts.

Due to the risk of blowing snow, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for portions of western and northern Siouxland. The affected counties in northeast Nebraska are under the advisory until 10am while the counties north of the Missouri River are under the advisory until 4pm.

Once the snow stops falling, the concern for blowing snow will greatly drop. Since we had heavy and wet snowflakes, they will not get picked up by the wind as easily as light and fluffy flakes.

Speaking of the wind, High Wind Warnings and Wind Advisories have been posted across the area. Wind gusts as high as 50-60mph are possible.

Heading into the afternoon and especially the evening, the wind will begin to calm down. In eastern Siouxland, gusts of 30mph will remain tonight.

It will be a cold night Saturday into Sunday morning as a northwest wind continues to push colder air into the region. Temperatures could drop to near 20° with wind chills in the teens and upper single digits.

That will be a far cry from the nearly 80° highs we had on Thursday and Friday.

After a cold morning, temperatures will climb into the low-50s in the afternoon under a partly cloudy sky.

Spring-like weather will return for St. Patrick’s Day on Monday as highs climb well into the 70s! There will be a slight cooldown on Tuesday with highs near 60°.

A system will bring the chance for rain and snow back to Siouxland after sunset Tuesday and into Wednesday morning. There are still more questions than answers with that system. Stay with the KTIV First Alert Weather Team over the next few days as we refine that forecast.
