Rochester, N.Y. — There was a big turnout for an evening that was dedicated to celebrating the contributions of African Americans in the Rochester community.
The Black Heritage Youth Gala was held at the David F. Gantt R-Center on North Street on Friday night and featured a variety of performances.
Each attendee was also tasked with researching an inventor of their choice to share at the gala, and bringing a cultural dish for everyone to sample.
Organizers say it was a chance for all community members to learn.
“So many times now, a lot of Black history is overlooked or not talked about,” said Carmen Jones, the community center manager for the city of Rochester. “Within our R-Center, we provide that outlet for our participants to come to do their own research, ask questions and learn, and also ask questions about the community they’re in that holds a lot of history as well.”
The city of Rochester will host its Black Heritage Gala at the Joseph A. Floreano Rochester Riverside Convention Center on Saturday, April 12.
