Glenn Schembechler, the recently-hired assistant director of football recruiting at the University of Michigan, has resigned in disgrace after his public Twitter likes drew widespread attention.
"I was wrong. We must never sanitize morally unsanitary, historical behaviors that have hindered the Black community, or any other community," Schembechler said in a statement released Monday. "There are no historical silver linings for the experience of our brothers and sisters."
The controversy surrounding Schembechler
Schembechler, the son of former Michigan coach and administrator Bo Schembechler, was appointed to his new position on May 17. But it soon came to light that the younger Schembechler, nicknamed "Shemy," was liking problematic, racist tweets.
"Any words or philosophies that in any way seek to underplay the immeasurable suffering and long-term economic and social inequities that hundreds of years of slavery and the 'Jim Crow' era caused for Black Americans is wrong," Schembechler said through a crisis management firm.
Michigan moves on
Although Schembechler reportedly un-liked roughly 1,000 tweets before deactivating his account, the damage to his reputation -- despite years of scouting at the NFL level -- had been done.
"Any words or philosophies that in any way seek to underplay the immeasurable suffering and long-term economic and social inequities that hundreds of years of slavery and the 'Jim Crow' era caused for Black Americans is wrong," Michigan athletic director Warde Manuel and head coach Jim Harbaugh said in a joint statement.
