GRAND RAPIDS, MI — Creation, Destruction, Reflection, a series of 20 intricately carved vases at DeVos Place displaying ancient landmarks from the Delphi Temple to the streets of Jerusalem, won the $12,500 ArtPrize 2022 Artist-to-Artist award.
The entry, created by brothers Brad and Bryan Caviness of Browns Summit, North Carolina, was one of 16 artists and venues to receive awards during ArtPrize’s closing ceremony Friday at Studio Park in downtown Grand Rapids.
The Artist-to-Artist award was the biggest cash award at this year’s event.
Other awards ranged from $2,500 to $10,000.
Creation, Destruction, Reflection was a hit at this year’s event, drawing big crowds who closely examined the historical scenes carved inside the clay vases.

On their website, the brothers say their art combines their interest in history with their “talents for art and design to inspire an appreciation for monumental achievements in art and architecture, bring attention to the destruction of ancient sites, and generate an interest in preserving the ones that are still here, whether threatened by the slow progress of time, natural disaster or war.”
“We start by creating interpretive reproductions of ancient pottery,” the brothers said on their website. “After distressing the surface, the jar is broken to reveal the interior. We then work clay into the volume of the jar to create a panoramic view of the site, visually uniting a culture’s artifact with it’s location.”
