Mariah Carey’s dreams of breaking into the lucrative celebrity alcohol brand market may have hit a road bump as a brand already exists with the name of her Irish cream label.

The 52-year-old music icon is hoping to follow in the footsteps of the likes of George Clooney, Angelina Jolie and Kylie Minogue by creating an alcohol brand that fans can enjoy.

And this week, Mariah unveiled the product of two years of development – her Black Irish cream liqueur; a creamy alcoholic drink.

While fans all over the world might be looking forward to sampling the new drink, alcohol fans in the UK and Ireland might have to wait a little longer as reports of a rival brand may hamper her advance on the alcohol market on this side of the Atlantic.

The Sun on Sunday reports: “a brand already exists with exactly the same name.

“Black Irish stout is produced by the Darker Still Spirits Company in Dublin.”

The publication also claims a spokesperson for Mariah’s brand said the Dreamlover hit maker “owns the US rights to the name” and that Darker Still Spirits are “in the process” of having their rights revoked.

The Mirror has contacted representatives for further information.

Mariah launched her Black Irish brand last week with a glittering advertising campaign – which featured the star cavorting in a shimmering dress in the Caribbean while enjoying glasses of her creamy drink.

Posing on a beach for a shot shared on Instagram, Mariah wrote: “Introducing Black Irish... Two years in the making. Truly a cause for celebration!!!”

While the star later added that her brand is available Original Irish Cream, Salted Caramel, and White Chocolate flavours.

While the brand name is a play on Mariah’s own heritage – as her father was an African-American, Afro-Venezuelan man named Alfred Carey and her mother, Patricia, is of Irish descent.

Speaking about the brand last week, Mariah said: “I wanted to create something that embodies the holidays and gives everyone a reason to celebrate year-round, and I really think we have done that with Black Irish.”

The chart topping star is just the latest in a long-line of famous stars who have broken into the alcohol industry.

Film star George Clooney, along with Cindy Crawford’s husband Rande Gerber, famously launched a tequila brand called Casamigos in 2013 – which was sold to Diageo in 2017 for a reported $1 billion (£734 million).

Film star Angelina Jolie and her former husband Brad Pitt own a vineyard in France which sells high-end wines under the brand name Miraval.

While Kylie Minogue has also enjoyed recent success in the wine world by releasing a self-titled range of bottles from her own French vineyard.

And other celebs including The Rock, Nick Jonas, Kendall Jenner and Rita Ora have entered the market with tequila brands of their own.
