Tom Riel, Vice President for Sales and Services with the Providence Warwick Convention & Visitors Bureau (PWCVB), joined GoLocal News Editor Kate Nagle on LIVE to discuss how meetings, conventions and sporting events booked by PWCVB and held during the organization’s fiscal year -- July 2017 through June 2018 -- yielded $73.65 million in direct spending for Rhode Island.
"The process takes three to four [years]," says Riel of booking the big conventions. "So it begins a few years out, when our sales team fans across the country."
"The [average] hotel rate has gone up $5 this year," said Riel, of the Average Daily Rate climbing to $170.20, up from $165.52 last year -- and hotel occupancy for the past 12 months going from 74.2 percent for Providence, up from 70.8 percent last year.
"We're looking forward to the new inventory, inventory we have not previously had -- a lot is extended stay or long term," said Riel of the new hotel construction coming online in Providence. "We do have a significant number of guests who come Monday and stay until Thursdays -- for months, mainly consultant. This offers them a terrific product.
Riel noted that the summer season in downtown Providence this year has been noticed by guests.
"There's a lot of people out and about right now. We had a customer here just this week who remarked on how vibrant the city was. Based on the liveliness of the city....she said there's 'just something going on' - and they're booking 1260 rooms in 2020.
Riel said that apart from additional hotel rooms, in his role in the CVB, if he could wish for another asset -- it would be more convention space.
"The convention center is our primary asset. About 70% of our revenue we bring in, the direct spend is associated with the convention center," said Riel. "I wish we had a larger convention center -- we have the demand right now."
