"Airport Council International" is a world organization for airport authorities, which aims to unify practices and standards for all airports in the world. This organization was founded in 1991, with headquarters in Montreal, Canada, and its members operate in almost 2,000 airports. During the first 4 months of 2024 alone, over 2.7 million passengers traveled on TIA, leading to a 65% increase from the same period last year. With these figures, the International Airport of Tirana surpasses that of Sofia, becoming one of the most successful airports in the Balkans. The growth trend as well as the addition of new destinations during the tourist season have increased the optimism of the airport managers, who predict a figure expected to exceed 9.3 million passengers by the end of 2024. The third phase of expansion has already begun , through which the surfaces of the terminal will be tripled. Also, work is being done to extend the runway and new aircraft stands are being added to meet the requirements of trans-oceanic lines. In June 2023, the second phase of the expansion was completed and work is being done at a fast pace for the completion of the third phase where about 50,000 m2 will be added. The large investments that the Kastrati Group has made in the "Mother Teresa" Airport, have brought a greater number of airlines, new contracts, added destinations, increased opportunities for direct travel to many cities of the world, as well as more to come. visitors from these countries.
